Japanese keyword hack, also known as Japanese SEO spam, Japanese symbol spam, or the Japanese search spam is a very unique and popular way to hack into a website and control them according to our own will. This type of hack affected many websites and your website could be one of them. Not just once, this type of hack can affect your website many times if not removed properly. In this type of spam, you can see random pages in your website but the title, description, and content written in Japanese. Also, Google search results show you the content of infected pages in Japanese.

Websites that are based upon the Content Management System (CSM) like WordPress, Magento, Drupal, or OpenCart can also be affected in a way that they produce spammy pages automatically time to time which are loaded with Japanese words, sales, or store advertisements. Due to these spammy attacks owners of the websites face many problems. So, if you are one of them or don’t want to be one of them, then let’s first find the method to identify these problems to get your website back from the scammers.

Things to keep in mind: -

  • First of all, put your website offline, so that you can remove this spam, also prevent any user to visit those spammy pages.
  • Now Backup your website in any offline location so that in any case of problem you could get it back.
  • In any case, you are using CMS websites, then make the backup of the database as well.

Check Your Website on Search Engine: -

A google search is a good start to tackle towards the identification of such pages. To find all the pages that are infected to these spams, just open google and type “site: [ your website root URL]” and with this search, Google will show your website and also the pages that have been infected by those spams. Also, if you think that this spam could be done by a hacker, then go to the search console and check for security issues. Every time you click on an infected page it will either redirect you to any gibberish page or open any advertisement.

404 Errors: -

If any movement of time you open any of the infected pages and find a 404 error over there then it doesn’t mean that the problem has been solved now, it’s a unique way to hide all the content inside the page by 404 error. Spammers cloak the content to fool you and make you think that it is just a flaw from internet, But Don’t get fooled from this trick.

Fixing the spam

Find infected files and scripts: -

For this work, you have to be calm and concentrated, because you have to check every single file and every single script in your website. Even if it is of very small size or made by your own hands, never leave any file unchecked. Because even a small part of script can make a backdoor for spammers and they can enter in your website any time. Also, if you are using a CMS website then just re-install the core files so that all the hacked content and script will be deleted. Also, reinstall files for any modules, extensions, plugins, or themes used in the site.

Check The .htaccess File: -

The spammers can also use any malicious file that will act as verification tokens and help spammers to create accounts in search console. Also, this kind of attack used to trick the users and search engines to redirect them to the malicious pages. To fix this, just search for all the “.htaccess” files in search console along with their locations on server, and replace them with the default “.htaccess” file.

Remove Unknown Accounts: -

Hackers commonly add spammy mail accounts to become the admin of the website to change the settings at any point of time. For fixing such attack, just go to the accounts of the search console and find all the newly added accounts. If you don’t recognize any of them then remove their access from your website. For future security keep your eyes on search console verifications.

Find Recently Modified Files: -

This type of method let you know all the files that are modified in recent time period. Just log-in to your web server as admin and sort all the files according to date or time. With this little thing, all the files that spammers have added or edited in recent time period will show-up, now go through all the recent files and keep eyes on doubtful changes in codes and files. In any case, you find a malicious file, then just replace it with clean backup file.

Investigate the Sitemap: -

Hackers could also change the sitemap or add malicious code in it so that they can index the gibberish pages. Detect any spammy code carefully, and if you find any, then change the file with fresh backup version.

  • Keep looking for malicious activities in your website.
  • Change your password from time to time.
  • Keep looking for spammy files in your web server.
